21st Sunday I went to Calvary Chapel Greenwood (CCG)
this
morning. It is the church we used to go to when we lived here. They meet in a
combination building that is also used by Greenwood Christian School (GCS).
Belinda is mainly responsible for this school. When we moved to Greenwood, she
found an older Christian school on the other side of town. It was struggling and
I'm not sure how long it would have continued. To make a long story shorter, she
got involved, found the current site, chaired the board, designed the initial
plan, oversaw the construction, worked on getting building permits, etc, etc.
Once I got there this morning, it took me a while to get into the service as I
kept seeing old friends to chat with. One of the first was Ken Danielson.
Ken Ken is now the church administrator. When we
first knew Ken and his wife Linda, he was working at Erskin college as, I think,
the athletic trainer. I have many fond memories of having lunch with them after
church on numerous Sundays. It was so great to see them. Linda still has a sweet
gentle spirit and I was glad to see that Ken's laugh still accents most
conversations. Years ago, Ken and I went to see The Mask
movie
together & laughed harder than anyone else in the theater.

Todd & Tim Todd and Tim are brothers. You know the type. If they are
playing in one of those games where you have to get your teammate to say a
specific word, yet you can't use certain words, they will win every time. For
instance, Tim would say, “blue potatoes” and Todd would say “earthquake”
(the correct answer)! Everyone else would be baffled. I think the game was
Taboo. Anyway, we have kept up with them over the years, but mainly kept up with Tim
since he is still single. Todd is now the dean of students at GCS. This
fascinates me since he has always been, like Tim, out of the box – guess that
is one of the reasons I think so highly of both of them! I wish I had had more
time to visit Todd, but with 5 kids and his job, he stays pretty busy. I got to
see his wife, LeAnne at church. She is so much fun to be with and seems to
always have a smile on her face.

Tim is a musician and leads worship at CCG. He has
a passion for God and music. He plays piano and guitar and writes music as well
as sings. I got together with him twice while I was here and we had a great
visit. When I asked what all he was doing now, he told me that he teaches a
Japanese boy English, buys and sells mobile homes, tunes pianos, teaches piano
and guitar and leads worship at other churches or events from time to time. He
says that he is going in a lot of directions and a prayer request is for clarity
in which directions to pursue. As we talked, he mentioned his interest in the
the 24/7 prayer movement. Haven't heard of it? Here is what their web site says: “24-7prayer started by accident in September 1999, with a bunch of young
people in England who got the crazy idea of trying to pray non-stop for a month.
God turned up and they couldn't stop till Christmas! From there the prayer
meeting has spread into many nations, denominations and age-groups. Hundreds of
non-stop prayer meetings now link up here on the web to form a unique chain of
prayer.” Tim also mentioned Boiler Rooms. Again from their web site: “A 24-7 Boiler Room is a simple Christian community that practices a daily
rhythm of prayer, study and celebration whilst caring actively for the poor and
the lost. The Two Purposes: a 24-7 Boiler Room exists to love God in prayer and
to love its neighbors in practice. These purposes are contextualized in
community and expressed in a defined location.”
Yancey & Beth This couple has to be two of the most fun people I know to
hang out with. Beth has some great stories of her wild days and Yancey always
makes me laugh and is just fun! He is a landscape architect by trade and they
are both really out there (ah, kindred spirits). After church, we were talking
and a story came up where Yancey bet me a dollar I would not run across the
gravel parking lot barefooted. That was an easy dollar for me to make and gave
him a great laugh. Well, as we were talking about it, the bet came up again.
Yancey only had 70-cents, but someone else (Todd?) had a dollar. SO off came the
shoes & socks and off I went. Another easy dollar. Yancey did not pay me the
70-cents, btw!

Missy Belinda's sister, Sandra, had a daughter named
Missy that lived for a while with us while we were in Greenwood. She even went
to France with us in the summer of '96 for our summer mission program, then
lived in Tryon with us briefly before returning to Greenwood. Missy is now
married and still lives here. I met her at church and we sat together. After
church, we went to Fatz Cafe (restaurant) with Tim for lunch. Tim had to leave
after a while and Missy and I stayed to talk. When we left Fatz, we were the
only customers still in the restaurant. It was so good to see her. She is now a
bank teller in downtown Greenwood. She is very easy going and was a special
addition to our family. Unfortunately over the years, I have done a poor job of
keeping up with her. Since my divorce, I was not sure what it would be like
seeing her and mentioned that to her. She replied that I was still her family
too. Thanx Missy!!!!
